CHA University's Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, represented by Professor Han Hyun-wook, signed an agreement with AI security specialist SANDS Lab (KOSDAQ 411080; CEO Kim Ki-hong) on the 6th at CHA Bio Complex in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province. The agreement covers research and development of medical and general network security through IITP technology exchange and collaboration.

Medical large language models (LLMs) and AI diagnostic and analytical platforms are spreading rapidly throughout healthcare. Because they use sensitive information such as patient medical records, imaging data and genomic analysis results, they are exposed to new attack techniques and security threats, including data leakage, model poisoning, prompt injection and API vulnerabilities.

The agreement, made possible through technology exchange and collaboration facilitated by the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), marks the start of a joint project to develop next-generation medical security technology. The project will proactively analyze and respond to threats facing medical LLMs and AI-based diagnostic and treatment solutions. CHA University will contribute data from real-world medical infrastructure and clinical research environments, while SANDS Lab will optimize its AI-based threat analysis and network security response technologies for medical data environments.

The organizations agreed to collaborate closely in several areas: academic and technical information exchange for Security for AI development; joint research on threat analysis and security response; shared use of physical resources such as equipment and facilities; and identification of joint projects.

The partnership is expected not only to protect training data for medical AI models but also to enable the design of an integrated security framework covering hospital electronic medical record (EMR) systems, genomic analysis servers, telemedicine platforms and AI medical devices. Another major benefit is the potential to accelerate commercialization of medical AI models ready for immediate clinical use, through proof-of-concept (PoC) testing based on CHA University's clinical research, medical big data and real-world healthcare settings.

Alongside joint development of AI-based medical data security technology, the organizations plan to continue exchanges and cooperation to build an ecosystem connecting industry, academia, research institutes and hospitals. Activities will include patents and papers, participation in academic conferences and training of medical security professionals.

Professor Han Hyun-wook said, “Advances in medical AI are transforming patient care, but their value can be undermined without supporting security. Through our collaboration with SANDS Lab, we will scientifically analyze the diverse threats that can arise in medical environments and establish safe, trustworthy security throughout the lifecycles of hospitals, laboratories and medical devices.”

CEO Kim Ki-hong said, “Data security in healthcare can directly affect a person's life, making stable operation a source of competitiveness. We will provide next-generation security technology so that the big data accumulated through research by CHA University's outstanding medical professionals can be used to develop AI for clinical practice, drug discovery and healthcare solutions.”

Starting with this agreement, SANDS Lab will explore opportunities to participate in new projects such as bio-healthcare cluster development and automation of personal medical information services. It also plans to extend its AI-based medical security technology beyond general hospitals, R&D centers and medical devices to smart healthcare infrastructure more broadly, including healthcare towns and cultural and commercial facilities.
