AI-based cyber threat intelligence (CTI) specialist SANDS Lab (KOSDAQ 411080, CEO Kim Ki-hong) announced on the 4th that its AI-based malware information prediction technology had been granted a U.S. patent.

The patented next-generation cybersecurity technology uses AI to predict and respond to malware that may emerge in the future, rather than simply detecting malware that already exists.

Advances in AI are producing new threats and malware worldwide and increasing damage from personal information and data leaks. Existing cybersecurity systems, however, face limitations: AI models may identify only malware represented in their training data, or fail to detect diverse threats that exploit generative AI.

SANDS Lab developed technology that disassembles existing malware into functional units to create a dataset, assigns attack techniques to those functions according to the MITRE ATT&CK Matrix, and builds big data describing attack characteristics and methods. AI then learns from this data.

The trained AI can reassemble individual malware functions into new malware to predict potential threats, then automatically generate response policies and rules to counter it. By repeating this process, AI predicts and creates malware that could arise in the future, enabling proactive responses to emerging AI-driven malware and data leakage threats.

The patent enables proactive prediction and response to AI-driven cyber threats, including possibilities that attackers themselves might find difficult to develop. It can therefore be used in AI security products and to strengthen cybersecurity against the recently prominent cross-border threats associated with AI models.

CEO Kim Ki-hong said, “By researching and developing next-generation cybersecurity technologies ahead of emerging AI threats, we will demonstrate our global capabilities through a patent strategy that favors early acquisition of international rights.” He added, “This is a granted patent, not merely an application, and we expect it to become a core technology patent at the global as well as domestic level, creating economic demand such as technology royalties in the U.S. market.”

Under its new slogan “Future-Ready Technology,” SANDS Lab is expanding its strategy this year from a CTI-centered business toward a technology development-focused cybersecurity company, using the big data accumulated through years of CTI operations and the AI it has developed. It will continue filing international patents for these technologies.
