Cyber threat intelligence specialist SANDS Lab (KOSDAQ: 411080; CEO Kim Ki-hong) explored cooperation in November in Bonn, Germany, home to Fraunhofer-Institut für Kommunikation, Informationsverarbeitung und Ergonomie (FKIE), part of Europe’s largest applied research organization.

Fraunhofer researches applied technologies for future markets and needs, including AI, next-generation computing, and quantum technology, for use throughout society. FKIE, one of its specialized institutes, conducts research in ICT, security, and embedded systems.

The meeting was especially meaningful because it grew out of researchers’ presentations on shared topics at the UK’s VB2023 conference in October, where both sides impressed one another and arranged to meet. At a time when international cybersecurity cooperation is increasingly important, the collaboration led to a new technology agreement.

The agreement focuses on exchanging and cooperating on core technologies grounded in cybersecurity’s fundamental values, beyond applied technology and commercial products. Its central purpose is a shared commitment to technology needed for incident response and proactive defense.

It places particular emphasis on deep malware analysis and stronger tracing capabilities. The main goal is a new AI-based framework that predicts and responds to emerging threats by analyzing characteristics within code, beyond merely labeling files malicious or benign.

SANDS Lab introduced DBP (Deep Binary Profiler), its binary reverse-engineering-based attacker profiling technology recently presented at AVAR2023 in Dubai, and its newly launched CTX threat intelligence service. Fraunhofer introduced the open malware knowledge service Malpedia and shared research. The teams actively exchanged findings and discussed concrete plans and expected benefits of cooperation.

The organizations expect complementary joint research combining SANDS Lab’s AI infrastructure with Fraunhofer’s human expertise to advance their technology together.

Sung Han-kyu of SANDS Lab’s Overseas Business Team said, “This cooperation gives us an opportunity to advance cybersecurity technology and take another step forward in addressing global threats. It will contribute not only technical achievements but also to security cooperation and development in the international community.”
